Ron Desantis entered the race for the Republican presidential candidate as Trump's main rival

May 26, 2023

Washington [US], May 26: The governor of the US state of Florida, Ron DeSantis, announced tonight that he is entering the race for the presidential candidate of the Republican Party, in which his main rival will be former US President Donald Trump.
The 44-year-old Desantis' entry into the presidential race, which has been speculated for months, marks a new chapter in his political career marked by a meteoric rise from a little-known member of Congress to a two-term governor to one of the country's leading politicians.
The decision to enter the fight for the Republican nomination was revealed by Desantis in a document he submitted to the Federal Election Commission ahead of an online conversation with Twitter CEO Elon Musk, according to the Associated Press.
Desantis is considered Trump's main rival within the Republican Party, although some question his readiness for the highest level of US politics.
The Florida governor is considered one of the strongest Republican candidates in their bid to take over the White House from Democrat Joseph Biden, who will be 81 years old at the time of the election.
Desantis enters the race as the front-runner for the Republican nomination alongside Trump, given his polling ability, fundraising prowess and campaign infrastructure.
Along with Trump and Desantis, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and entrepreneur VivekRamaswamy are also in the race for the Republican presidential candidate. Former US Vice President Mike Pence is also considered a possible candidate, but he has not yet announced his entry into the race.
The presidential candidate of the Republican Party, who will be known in the first half of next year, will be a rival to Biden in the elections on November 5, 2024.
Republicans criticize the 80-year-old Biden for turning the country too far to the left and failing to deal with inflation, immigration and crime.
