Sep 03, 2022

Ottawa [Canada], September 3: Canada confirmed 20,843 new COVID-19 cases for the week of Aug. 21-27, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said on Friday.
According to the weekly update issued by the PHAC, the number of total COVID-19 cases and deaths in Canada reached 4,179,337 and 44,085 respectively. The daily positive rate during the week averaged at 10.8 percent, and daily tests per 100,000 people were 61.
The agency said a detailed report on 4,060,184 cases showed that 191,565 cases, or 4.8 percent, were hospitalized, and of those hospitalized, 15.4 percent were admitted to intensive care units.
Health Canada on Thursday authorized an adapted version of the ModernaSpikevax COVID-19 vaccine for use as a booster dose in individuals 18 years of age or older which targets the original SARS-CoV-2 virus from 2019 and the Omicron (BA.1) variant.
COVID-19 modelling studies published recently showed that without Canadians' collective efforts in achieving high vaccine coverage and adhering to public health measures, the country could have accumulated up to 34 million cases, 2 million hospitalisations and 800,000 deaths as of April 2022, the PHAC said.
