Germany registers 11 pct more startups in 2021: report

Apr 26, 2022

Berlin [Germany], April 26:The number of newly founded startups in Germany in 2021 increased by 11 percent year-on-year to 3,348, according to an annual report published on Monday by analytics firm Startupdetector.
After the first COVID-19 lockdown and associated economic uncertainties in spring 2020, startup activity in Germany was probably encouraged by "ongoing digitization in various areas of life and work," the report said.
As in previous years, the most active German industry sectors in terms of hatching new companies were software, medicine and e-commerce, with 471, 351 and 338 start-ups respectively.
The country's media industry and the environmental technology sector in particular saw the highest growth rates, with 85 percent and 144 percent more startups respectively, compared to the previous year.
"The ubiquitous climate crisis and the accompanying societal upheavals have obviously motivated a particularly large number of founders to set up a business in this area," the report said.
With 20.5 startups per 100,000 inhabitants, the district of Starnberg in southern Bavaria came in ahead of the country's capital Berlin as the area with the highest startup density, which the report said was a surprise.
At the same time, the number of German start-up companies that attracted external investors rose by 27 percent, to just over 2,000.
