ICOM announces new definition of museum

Prague [Czech Republic], August 26: The International Council of Museums (ICOM) on Thursday announced a new definition of a museum during its 26th general conference which has been running in Prague since Aug. 20.
The new definition, which was approved on Wednesday by the ICOM Extraordinary General Assembly, defines a museum as a "not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage.
"Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing."
According to ICOM, the new definition reflects some of the major changes in the roles of museums, recognizing "the importance of inclusivity, community participation and sustainability."
In addition to this revision, ICOM also elected its president and members to the executive board for the period 2022-2025.
Italian Emma Nardi was elected as ICOM's new president, replacing outgoing president Alberto Garlandini. Meanwhile, Zhao Feng of China was elected as an ordinary member of the executive board.
"The success of ICOM Prague 2022 demonstrates the importance and relevance of the themes we have tackled: from climate change resilience and leadership to human rights and innovation," said Garlandini.
At a gala event during the conference, which was hosted by the Czech National Museum, the ICOM general conference flag was handed over to the organizers of the 27th ICOM general conference. This will be held in Dubai in 2025.
Founded in 1946, ICOM is a global organization of museums and museum professionals working on the promotion and protection of cultural heritage.
Themed the Power of Museums, this year's general conference in Prague has attracted museum professionals from around the world. It will last until Aug. 28.
